PT markets: Time for a paradigm change

Didier van de Velde was asked by UITP to write a “point of view” for UITP’s 2017 “Public Transport Trends” report. In his contribution, titled “European markets and relationships between actors: Time for a paradigm change” Didier sketched how the sector could move towards more flexibility and synergy, using market potentials:

“The state, or tendered contracts, or the free market?” For the last 30 years, this question has dominated debates on the relationship between actors in the European public transport markets. For the future, we will have to answer the following question: ‘how to combine the free market and tendered contracts and the state?”

Published every two years, Public Transport Trends is a publication detailing the most significant developments having an effect on the mobility market in general and on public transport in particular. Featuring best practices, key statistics and exclusive interviews, the 2017 edition of Public Transport Trends explores several significant developments driving change across the sector and across the globe:

  • Integrated mobility services
  • (Re)organisation of the public transport market
  • Fossil fuels and beyond: the opportunity of developing alternatives in an uncertain oil market
  • The motorcycle boom and its impact on urban mobility
